Resumo
Textiles, historically separated from the canon of Western art, currently inhabit a liminal space between art and craft. This work explores the intersection between textile crafts, specifically crochet, and contemporary visual arts. The research combines practical artistic production with theoretical research guided by the act of making itself, with the artistic process acting as a conductor. The basis of the investigation is grounded in an affective connection with textile practices. The art works presented were created from crochet tapestry, which allows for simultaneous structural and pictorial construction. Structured in three chapters, this Final Course Project analyzes the aesthetic potential of crochet using the creative process as a methodology, which finds support in the reflections of Luigi Pareyson and in the writings of Cecilia Almeida Salles. The main artistic references presented are Gunta Stölzl, Sonia Gomes and Joana Vasconcelos. The re-signification of the practice of crochet demonstrates that the threads, yarns, and stitches not only weave works, but, similarly, compose a reflection on how manual work that creates utilitarian objects can also create art.
