OBJECTIVE: To analyze in detail the progress of medicine in Doppler ultrasonography of the thyroid, since its first steps in history
to the present day, demonstrating its applications, limitations, and some issues that remain controversial.
METHODOLOGY: It was investigated Pubmed database with the following key words: ultrasound, Doppler, thyroid, thyroid
nodules. 13 articles were chosen to compose this review.
RESULTS: Despite being nonspecific in diffuse parenchymal disease, to study the nodules, thyroid Doppler is a well-established
examination today, allowing diagnosis of nodules not identified on palpation and defining characteristics useful in assessing the
risk of malignancy for which this Chammas classification is the most used in Brazil since 2007.
CONCLUSION: Doppler thyroid is not enough to replace the fine needle aspiration biopsy and cytological study in the definitive
diagnosis of malignant thyroid nodules, however, has its well-established role in the identification of very small nodules and
especially in risk stratification of malignancy thereof.
