Resumo
There is an essential metatheoretical dichotomy in the philosophy of science and in cognitive science that implies important methodological consequences in the social sciences: the distinction between purely obser-vational and “theory-laden” statements. The defense of each alternative reflected upon the definition and the foundation of empirical science methods, specially calling into question the objectivity. Although the general acceptance in contemporary social sciences that observation is, at least, linguistic and socially conditioned, the pursuit of an “empirical base” reappears, mainly criticizing a radical relativism that emerged from the approval of the “theory-ladeness” thesis. The problem gains relevance in sociological tendencies as the ethnomethodology or social constructionism that almost deny the possibility of an “objective” description of the world or of the human experience.
