Resumo

This work reflects on Critical Discourse Analysis formation as a transdisciplinary paradigm of studies. Built on a confluence between linguistics, notably Systemic-Functional Linguistics, and social theories, Critical Discourse Analysis has the British professor and researcher Norman Fairclough as one of its main exponents, a pioneer in the use of Critical Discourse Analysis term in an article published in 1985. Fairclough proposed a ‘textually oriented discourse approach’ composed of categories for investigating social problems through language. This context justifies the study we carried on about the theoretical and constitutive origins of Critical Discourse Analysis under Fairclough's theoretical approach. Over the years, this same approach has been fruitfully worked by linguists and non-linguists in the investigation of relationships between language and society around the world. This research uses methodological concepts from linguistic historiography, especially Koerner (1996) and Swiggers (2010). The results obtained from the discussion point to transdisciplinarity which combines social theories and Systemic-Functional Linguistics remains the main differential of Critical Discourse Analysis. Additionally, we can say that, through transdisciplinary, Critical Discourse Analysis is increasingly positioned as a socially applicable paradigm without ceasing to be characterized as a textually oriented discourse analysis.
