Resumo

This study critically analyzes the differences between traditional karate and sport karate, with an emphasis on their philosophical foundations, teaching methods, competitive structure, and social and formative impacts. The research adopts a qualitative approach, based on an integrative literature review encompassing works published up to 2024. The findings were organized into four thematic axes and discussed through the lens of the Sociology of Sport, particularly drawing on authors such as Bourdieu, Elias, Dunning, Foucault, and Gramsci. It was found that traditional karate prioritizes ethical formation, self-knowledge, and character development as core principles, while sport karate emphasizes technical performance through performance goals, standardized rules, and competitive visibility. Despite existing tensions, the study highlights the possibility of reconciling both approaches, provided they are grounded in critical, sensitive, and context-aware pedagogical projects within school, social, and sports settings. It is concluded that karate, when practiced with formative intent, retains its potential as a tool for holistic education and social transformation.
