Palatite crônica em eqüinos: aspectos epidemiológicos e avaliação de dois métodos de tratamento

| dc.description.abstract | This study aimed to describe some of the epidemiological aspects related to equine palatitis. Also, this study intended to compare cauterization (Group I) and surgical removal followed by cauterization (Group II) as methods of treatment, and to evaluate economical viability of both protocols. A total of 520 horses were examined, out of which 49 presented palatitis. The main epidemiological aspects considered were prevalence, management and feeding. Cauterization by incandescent iron was employed on the 25 animals from group I. The 24 animals from group II were submitted to surgical resection of the palate, followed by incandescent iron cauterization. Healing was evaluated through clinical scores. The material used and working hours of the surgeon were considered to estimate the treatment costs. The chi-square test (c2) was employed to analyze the data, having an NS of 5%, and the non-parametric test of Mann & Whitney. The prevalence of palatitis was of 9.42%. On breeds Crioulo, Arabian and Appaloosa the prevalence was of 33.33%, 17.65%, and 30%, respectively. It wasn’t observed any statistical difference among those breeds. The healing of the animals from GI was completed from seven to ten days and on those from GII from nine to 14 days. On the clinical score analysis for healing it was observed that from the fourth day GI presented a better score of healing when compared to GII. | dc.description.resumo | Este estudo teve como objetivo descrever alguns aspectos epidemiológicos relacionados à palatite em eqüinos, comparar a cauterização (Grupo I) e a remoção cirúrgica seguida por cauterização (Grupo II) como métodos de tratamentos e avaliar a viabilidade econômica dos dois protocolos terapêuticos. De 520 eqüinos examinados, 49 apresentavam palatite. Os principais aspectos epidemiológicos estudados foram: a prevalência, o manejo e a alimentação. A cauterização com ferro candente foi utilizada em 25 animais do grupo I. No grupo II, constituído por 24 eqüinos, fez-se a ressecção cirúrgica do palato, seguida de cauterização com ferro candente. A cicatrização foi avaliada por meio de escores clínicos, e para estimar os custos do tratamento consideraram-se os materiais de consumo e os honorários do cirurgião. Analisaram-se os dados utilizando o teste de Qui-Quadrado (c2), em NS de 5%, e o teste nãoparamétrico de Mann & Whitney (SAMPAIO, 1998). A prevalência da palatite foi de 9,42%. Nas raças Crioulo, Árabe e Apaloosa, a prevalência foi de 33,33%, 17,65% e 30%, respectivamente. Não se observou diferença significativa na freqüência da enfermidade entre essas raças. A cicatrização nos animais do GI completou-se entre sete e dez dias, e nos eqüinos do GII entre nove e quatorze dias. Na análise dos escores clínicos de cicatrização observou-se que a partir do quarto dia o GI apresentou melhor escore de cicatrização que o GII. Verificou-se que o valor total do tratamento foi de aproximadamente R$ 370,00 ou US$ 142,30. | pt |
