Resumo
This article presents the findings of a study focused on mapping the presence of women in the field of film scoring within Brazilian cinema. The primary aim is to shed light on the contributions of female composers, whose artistic work has historically been rendered invisible. In addition to identifying these composers, the research also seeks to quantify gender disparity in this specific domain of film production. The study examines films that were commercially released in Brazil between 1995 and 2019 - a period that begins with the so-called "retomada" (revival) of Brazilian cinema and ends just before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, during which film production expanded steadily due to public funding and cultural incentive policies. Beyond highlighting the evident gender imbalance, the results reveal that few women succeed in composing film scores independently or in establishing long-term careers in the field. This lack of continuity and authorship contributes to the persistent marginalisation of women’s creative presence in Brazilian film music.
