Luz e sombra na obra de Tadao Ando: uma leitura fenomenológica

Abstract

This work analyzes the role of light and shadow in the works of architect Tadao Ando, as fundamental sensory and poetic elements in the design of architectural spaces. Beyond its technical function, lighting (understood here as the constant interplay between light and shadow) can be understood as a catalyst for the phenomenological and affective experience in the built environment. This study investigates how light and shadow structured his projects, from their earliest stages, and how Tadao Ando uses them to create atmospheres that evoke memory and a connection between body and space, emphasizing the intangible and sensory dimensions. This work will be carried out using a qualitative phenomenological methodology, combining a bibliographic review and case study analysis of three of the architect's works: The Church of Water, The Church of Light, and the Chichu Art Museum. By recognizing architecture as an art of sensory experience, the study seeks to understand the architect's repertoire and offer a non-technical perspective on lighting, providing a glimpse into the poetics of space and the use of light as an expressive agent that dialogues with time, the body, and materiality. It demonstrates that illuminating a space is more than illuminating an environment; it illuminates the human experience, reaffirming the sensory dimension of architecture.
