Resumo
I present in this article reflections based on my ethnographic study of social networks in the city of Ouro Preto as a methodological approach to the study of cultural heritage. The analysis D draws on field research data compiled from interviews, archives and collections between 2007 and 2009. In this work I focus my interpretation on slaverywhich comprises one of the central threads of the wider texture of the cultural heritage of Ouro Preto. By tracing the relationship between slavery and the BY conceptual categories Of memory, museums, cultural heritage and history,I reveal the crystalization of an overarching category, that of suffering, present in the public social imaginary of the city. Suffering is represented and reified through museum practices that portray a historical narrative of the Brazilian Nation-state that is hierarchical, exclusionary and reductionist. These particular visions of suffering obliterate a wider complexity of Afro-Brazilian experiences and cosmologies related to the culture and history of the city, raising the possibility that the idea of social victimization obscures other possibilities for linking cultural patrimony to citizenship.
