Resumo

Our paper aims to analyze linguistic landscapes visible in public spaces in two different contexts, in considering the effects of globalization on groups’ differences presupposed by the variationist tradition. One of the contexts is a midsize urban area, the city of Anápolis, GO. The other is a quilombola (remaining heirs of resistant enslaved Africans) community in a rural area including many globalization’s indexes, as eco-tourism and heritage tourism. Both contexts are in Cerrado biome in the Brazilian Midwest. We discuss how infrastructures of globalization interfere with linguistic landscapes and how it influences the contexts. We use theoretical tools of Sociolinguistics of Mobility, that considers global complex forms of people mobility and high-speed dissemination of information and its impacts on complexity and unpredictability of linguistic practices. Scale is used to analyze the linguistic landscapes in visual empirical data generated. The analysis shows that the linguistic landscapes converge in many aspects, exhibiting differences and similarities. Thus, the rural-urban binary stability is challenge by the reordering of interactional scalar layers.
