Methodology: We analyzed medical records of two newborns, one male and one female, diagnosed with gastroschisis during the prenatal
that were born by cesarean section in HC / FM / UFGO and received treatment to correct the defect by primary closure in same-day delivery.
Results: Both mothers were primiparas and fit the age group at most risk for gastroschisis. The defect was confirmed in his
classic presentation, the right side of the umbilical cord that was normally inserted at the time of cesarean section. Birth weight
was 2095g and 2500g for girl and boy, respectively. The boy required cardiac resuscitation and although the girl had not needed
this procedure, her CRIB score was 46.2%. Newborns were operated by primary reduction technique on the same day and
admitted to the NICU. Major complications included sepsis neo precocious, laryngitis after extubation and increased need for
ventilatory support for the female newborn, and severe oliguria, distended and tense abdomen, with decreased peristalsis for
the male newborn. Both are still in intensive care at the HC / FM / UFGO.
Conclusion: Although the mortality associated with gastroschisis has dropped markedly in recent years, postoperative morbidity
and the incidence of complications remain high.
