Resumo
The current research intends to analyze the access and permanence of Haitian students in the
public school system in Goiânia, what public programs are implemented in the school system to
provide a welcoming atmosphere in practice, understanding education as an inalienable right, from
pre-school to the Adult Education Modality (YAE). Based on a documental investigation of the
State and Municipal Education Departments, and on the context of the public system of Goiânia, it
was possible to compare the demands of the school reality that welcomes Haitian students and the
discourses of the departments, which reported excellence in offering public services to these
immigrants. It was observed in both state and municipal education departments a disinterest in
implementing an effective program to welcome Haitian students. The only program that is
implemented by the Inclusion, Diversity and Citizenship Management of Goiânia is exclusively for
Venezuelan students and in school practice, the teachers are the only ones held responsible for the
school failure and the Haitian abandonment. It is truly discouraging for the student to register in a
school where all his previous knowledge is ignored, where there is a total unknown of his student
background, language, and culture. We have cited examples of successful educational practices in
other Brazilian cities, but we do not want them to be a role followed, but an alternative, a
possibility of another form of reception. Finally, based on successful educational practices
implemented in other Brazilian cities, we not tried to delineate a strict model to be followed, but
specially alternatives to the reception of immigrants in the public school system.
