Resumo

The middle course of the Araguaia River is an anabraching channel with tendency to braided, showing mobile and unstable landforms due to sandy excessive load. This paper presents a classifi cation of sedimentary environments and the recent lateral migration processes in the channel of the middle course of the Araguaia River. Results were based on the association of sedimentary facies from deposits contained in the alluvial plain, by analysis the sediment profi les from river margin, perforation samples and undeformed records. This paper identifi ed two sedimentary sub-environments associated to fl oodplain (plain fl ooded occasionally and swamps) and fi ve sub-environments associated to the main channel (main channel, secondary channels, lateral bars, central bars and islands and levees). It also recognized erosional and depositional processes that promote the channel migration of the middle course of the Araguaia. Depositional processes are based at stabilization of middle channel bars, increase of the size of the islands and sedimentation within the main channel. Results show the response of the fl uvial system and evolution of channel of the Araguaia from increase transported load.
