Resumo
This article examines the fictional creation
of The passion (1965), first novel in Almeida Faria’s
so called Lusitanian Tetralogy. Based on the mythical
criticism, it studies the mythopoetic invention of the
contemporary world represented in the novel. Also, it
verifies that the author criticizes the Portuguese reality
of tradition vis-à-vis revolutionary forces in the
country in the 1970’s. In order to do so, he constructs
the language and narrative of his novel based on the
expressive and symbolic force of myth and its
archetypical elements. Almeida Faria’s fictional
creation defends the theoretical and critical point of
view that literature can do historical criticism without
been poetical.
