Resumo

The Cerrado has been submitted in the last 40 years to an intense process of alteration of its physical and natural features to make room for agricultural and livestock activities, mainly. The present work aimed to investigate how these changes are presented in Geography schoolbooks and in the National Curricular Parameters for the discipline. The intent was to comprehend which view of Cerrado is presented in these didactical and pedagogical materials. For that end, a bibliographic revision about this theme was undertaken, and elementary school Geography textbooks were analyzed, understanding that these are the resources most often used by teachers. It was verified that, even though the Cerrado is one Brazil's most prominent environments, the theme is poorly explored in these manuals, being exposed in few pages and with conceptual deficiencies, even textual and illustrative misconceptions. Thus, the article highlights the importance and need of a solid and continued formation of the Basic Education teaching professional, to work beyond the often fragmented vision of these manuals and to be properly able of mediating the knowledge-building process with the students.
