Resumo

The purpose of this paper is to present the morphosyntactic alignments of the Akwe)- Xerente (Jê), an indigenous language of the Central Brazil, which is spoken by 3,100 persons. From the functional-typological point of view (Comrie 1976, 1981, 1985, 1989) and studies of the subject in Brazilian indigenous languages (Alves 2004, Cabral et al. 2004, Grannier 2002), the cases related to the grammatical subject and object, namely, the nominative, absolutive, ergative and partitive are described and analyzed. The nominative-absolutive and ergative-absolutive cases are emphasized. In Xerente, when the subjects of intransitive verbs are aligned twice, first as a subject of transitive verbs and, secondly, as objects of transitive verbs, the language system operates with the nominative-absolutive. The case ergative-absolutive is conditioned by the presence of post-verbal operators. In this case, the intransitive subject (S) be treated as the direct object (O) and different from the transitive subject (A) (Dixon 1979, 1994, Van Valin Jr. 2001). Thus, we aim to demonstrate how the split occurs between nominative-absolutive and ergative-absolutive alignments in that language.
