Resumo
Given the concern to raise the particularities of the development of national libraries in the American continent, according to the historical contexts of the formation of countries and libraries, research on National Libraries is carried out, to identify the similarities and differences regarding the formation, structure, functions, and objectives of the national libraries of the independent countries of the American continent. Therefore, it is necessary to trace the parameters in common with these libraries, analyze the historical process of libraries in general and later of national libraries as an institution, and understand the possible points of support for culture and reading practices that American national libraries offer, raise the specifics of the services provided, investigate the differences and similarities concerning valorization and understand the possible points of devaluation, whether in physical, social, material and cultural aspects. Bibliographical and documentary research is carried out, with a qualitative approach, and from the point of view of its objectives as exploratory. The research analyzed 25 institutional websites of national libraries on the American continent, and with that, it collected the main information about the physical, historical, and functional aspects of these libraries. As a result, it appears that the National Libraries in America will present similarities in terms of their functions, as well as being founded in the same period, which dates back to the conquests of independence from the colonizing metropolises and present programs for the development of national bibliography, and maintenance of the collective memory of their respective nations. Therefore, it can be concluded that colonization for some countries, in the case of Anglo-Saxon America, was beneficial for the development of libraries, specifically, their national libraries. On the other hand, it appears that in Latin America, where colonization was more imposed on the form of exploitation, it was seen that the establishment of their national libraries took place in a more restrained way and that many will go through instabilities due to financial or political problems over the years. Even so, it is imperative to note that BNs are institutions that fulfill their role for society and manage to develop, regardless of their geographic location, the exquisite work of preservation, dissemination of their collections and other services, and are also in the constant transformation to meet the needs imposed by the current information environment.
