Mahogany (Swietenia mahagoni, Meliaceae) and baru (Dipteryx alata, Fabaceae) are tree species of great economic importance for the production of luxury furniture, decoration, crafts and food. However, the effect of pathogens associated with its seeds can cause a reduction on populations of these species. Fungicide treatments are a safe and low-cost measure for the control of fungi associated with seeds. Therefore, the aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of different fungicide doses on the physiological and sanitary quality of mahogany and baru seeds. Seeds were treated with three Captan® doses (0,1; 0,3 and 0,5 g/ 100g of seeds). Sanitary evaluations were done in gerboxes with filter paper, which has shown different effects on the analyzed seeds. The chemical treatment provided a reduction in the incidence of fungi associated with baru seeds, so, this treatment is recommended for this species. Despite this recommendation for baru seeds, chemical treatment negatively influenced the development of mahogany seeds, impairing germination, probably due to the product´s penetration through the tegument, negatively influencing the development of the embryo.
