Velhos problemas, um Novo Mundo

Abstract

Understanding a city and planning for it require great care in the face of the impulse to simply organize space. Therefore, understanding the multiple layers—both material and immaterial—embedded within it becomes necessary for a deeper comprehension, even though such understanding still does not fully grasp the totality of this dimension. Thus, within this larger space we call the city, the smaller fragments that are part of these dynamics can provide clues about the path to be followed in the field of urban planning and public policies. In this sense, the present study focuses on the Jardim Novo Mundo neighborhood (1953), which is located within the city of Goiânia (1933), the young and modern capital of the State of Goiás, a city that has undergone planning and spatial organization processes since its conception. The relationship between these two elements, which at first glance appears to place us merely within a spatial dynamic, in fact conceals a connection of factors and actions that date back to the city’s original conception and its fragmented expansion. This process led Jardim Novo Mundo to become a vector of urban growth in the eastern portion of the city, particularly with the paving of Avenida Anhanguera. The application of strategies derived from the methodologies proposed by Franco (2001) in the book Environmental Planning for the Sustainable City, along with elements of the Neighborhood Development Plan (FERCOMERCIOSP, 2015), were selected for this study, given the importance of social, cultural, economic, and political understanding required for analysis and for the development of ideas in the field of urban planning. This is combined with the need for critical reflection and comprehension in order to propose and implement changes in the urban fabric, which, as previously stated, is embedded within multiple overlapping layers.
