Assessment of effective root system depth (z) over time is essential, because it represents water volume control in the soil-plant system. Consequently, correct estimates directly influence the development of rational management practices and water use in agricultural systems. The study aimed to evaluate and to identify models of best performance to estimate z to improve the determination of soil water storage to crops. The models used were based on days after planting (DAP), Julian days (J) and accumulated degree days (GDA). The comparison between actual and estimated values was performed using coefficient of determination adjusted (R²), performance index "d", agreement index "c", mean error and mean absolute error. The best model for the daily estimate of effective root system depth of sugarcane, bean and corn in the different climatic types studied, was the model that uses the daily crop coefficient values. The model that utilizes days after planting proposed by Borcioni (2008) was insufficient for the daily estimate of all cultures and climatic types studied. Models that use days after planting, julian days and accumulated degree-days were satisfactory in part, according to the culture and climate type.
