Resumo

This theoretical article discusses some ideas of Theodor Adorno about freedom, as part of the Critical Theory of Society, developed by the Frankfurt School. This discussion aims to provide some tools to social psychology, since this theme has not been frequently discussed. In order to carry out this theoretical research, Adorno’s major work, Negative Dialectics, was selected inasmuch as it approaches this issue more profoundly. Adorno points out the maleficence of freedom restraint due to individual, metaphysical, material, ontological, or empirical criteria. For him, although freedom is experienced by the individual, it possesses a close connection with mankind, since it is related to ethical, private, and universal matters. After all, freedom is the principle that should guide moral actions.
