Resumo
The purpose of this text is to present an analysis of the novel Chegou o Governador, by Bernardo Élis, in the attempt to verify how the referred novel contributed to settle in literature the stigmas of decay and isolation which from a long time have been held in Goiás’ Historiography, considering that this fiction’s plot looks into the country’s central captaincy in the first few years of the 19th century. Therefore, it was necessary to retake the steps once given by the local history’s developers, such as travelers and chroniclers, verifying how the Goiano novelist appropriated of the material elaborated by them to make his work of fiction. Thus, it is possible to see that Élis was, before all, an assiduous researcher of the primary and secondary sources, which revealed to him the manners of his region. In this way, he utilizes in great proportion, through the aesthetic, the speeches made by the forerunners of Goiás’ history and which in his hands achieved singular aspects of a perfect union between historical knowledge and artistic lore.
