Resumo
Comparing the syntactic characteristics of names and verbs in Tupí-Guaraní languages,
Queixalós (2001, 2006) defends the hypothesis that members of this family descend from a language
in which all lexical entries were predicated – a pattern called omnipredicativity, a concept proposed by
Launey (1994, 2004), to describe a type of language, prototypically represented by Nahuatl. According
to this author, one of the consequences of the omnipredicative pattern is the existence of transcategorial morphology, that is, the sharing of morphemes by different classes of words. In this
sense, we interpret that the degradation of the omnipredicativity of a language could be attested,
among other evidences, by the restriction of the transcategorial morphology of the personal markers.
In order to show this correlation, this work presents an analysis of four languages of the Tupí-Guaraní
family, spoken in South America - Tupinambá, Apyãwa (Tapirapé), Guajá and Nheengatú (general
language) - representing different stages of linguistic change from a pattern more to a less
prototypically omnipredicative (Praça, Magalhães & Cruz, (2017), Praça & Cruz (in press), Magalhães,
Praça & Cruz (submitted).
