Machado de Assis lido pelos comunistas brasileiros (1939-1958)

Abstract

The article presents a historiographic reconstitution of the debates that the work of the writer Machado de Assis provoked together with Octávio Brandão and Astrojildo Pereira, two fundamental intellectuals in the political and cul tural history of the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB). The legacy of Machado’s work had wide repercussions in debates about the fates of the Brazilian Revolution, the political agenda that guided the intellectual interventions of Pecebist nationalism. This article describes and analyzes a set of writings that Octávio Brandão and Astro jildo Pereira published between 1939 and 1958, dates that marked, respectively, the centenary of birth and the 50th anniversary of the death of Machado de Assis.
