Resumo
This course completion work aims to discuss and explore the theories of Historical-
Cultural Psychology on the relevance of the symbolic mediation process for the development
of thought and language, as these two elements are of great importance for the construction
of the human psyche. For this purpose, bibliographical research was chosen as a
methodology, in which an interpretative and critical reading of Vygotsky's works was carried
out, in particular, the books Formação Social da Mente (1991) and A Construção do
Pensamento e Linguagem (2001), moreover, a study of the author's commentators was also
carried out. In the research, the concepts of mediation through signs were investigated and
analyzed in order to understand the development of thought and language in human history
(phylogenesis) and in individual history (ontogenesis). In view of this, we point out that
symbolic mediation is what enables interaction with the sociocultural environment, in such a
way that psychological development is the result, above all, of cultural forms internalized
through the appropriation of symbolic elements. At the end of this work, it was concluded that
language as the main symbolic system is essential for the development of thought and human
subjectivity.
