Resumo

The theme of this work was The vulnerabilities and challenges faced by students in Youth and Adult Education (EJA) and it sought to highlight, through a scientific basis, how the process of implementing Youth and Adult Education in Brazil took place, mainly since the 1940s. It also investigated the challenges and problems these students face in entering and remaining in basic education. The qualitative-quantitative research was based on the references of Fávero (1996), Oliveira (1999), Ventura (2001), Di Pierro (2010), Silva et. al. (2015), among others. From the analysis of the research identified in the bibliographic sample, the problems and questions raised, it was possible to see the progress made by the EJA in Brazil in recent years through some specific public policies, but it was also noticeable that issues outside the school that are part of the lives of working students prevent them from exercising their full right to school education with regard to the low number of enrolments and permanence in educational institutions, work, financial issues, distance, housing, maternity and safety are some of the factors that interfere with the increase or decrease in these numbers. Another aspect pointed out in the research, which contributes to students staying in school, is related to the role of the teacher, teaching work and its importance in the process of building and consolidating the EJA
