Abstract

From a historical perspective, there is an expressive quantity of illustrated magazines, newspapers, albums and graphic novels that make it possible to point out the presence of comics in Latin America. But it remains under-researched from a publishing history perspective. Our essay will seek to develop themes that allow us to think about the materiality of comics in the region, in a dialogue with fields such as the history of books and reading. Some case studies of comics published throughout the 20th century will be discussed based on publishing aspects – typography, the relationship between images/ texts, cultural appropriations and the introduction of comic strips in literary projects – to seek out an interpretation of the historical peculiarities of comics in the region. In conclusion and from a transnational approach, we consider it possible to point out that such elements are central for the establishment of a Latin American expression of comics.
