O espraiamento urbano e produção habitacional na metrópole Goiânia

Abstract

The historic phenomenon of peripheralization of Latin American cities has been aggravated in the contemporary condition. In this process, overaccumulation has widened as inequalities and “globalized” urban models make their urban structure fragmented and sprawling. In this context, the objective of this article is to discuss the metropolization process of Goiânia, capital of the State of Goiás, from the perspective considering center and periphery’s dichotomy, focusing on the spread of its urban structure and housing production. The methodology includes the preliminary mapping of the housing production in Goiânia, both low-income and high-income developments, in the 2000-2020 timeframe, as well as analyzes resulting from this mapping. As a result, it was found that the highest concentration of developments related to social interest housing coincides with the outskirts of the city. The enterprises related to the higher income classes, on the other hand, are involved in the suburbs of the capital. It is concluded that the model being adopted is not adequate, as the sprawling urban structure contributes to inequality and social exclusion. The study also demonstrates the negative influence of urban sprawl, to the detriment of the possibilities of compaction of its current structure.
