Historical aspects of blood pressure measurement have been approached since its first observation in 1733, with reverend Hales, going through the introduction of the auscultatory method in 1905 with Korotkoff and arriving to our days with the semi automatic and automatic equipments of blood pressure measurement. The discussions involve the ways of taking the pressure (direct or indirect), the methods (auscultatory or oscillometric) and also the equipments used. The limitations of the methods are detached, and the technological progress that have allowed the development of semi automatic instruments as well as the ones of Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring are emphasized. Finally aspects related to future perspectives are approached, with the changes in the paradigm and the possibility of the daily use of simple, accurate and accessible equipments, making blood pressure measurement and the evaluation of others risk factors a routine in people lives.
