Resumo
The definition of the literary repertoire in the nineteenth century in different countries was the result of the actions of agents who established international networks of contacts, from which they outlined business strategies in the book market and chose works that would be of interest to their readers. Baptiste-Louis Garnier had relationships with various intermediaries and professionals in the publishing field and aligned his actions with the interests of his dealers, the demands of his audience and, of course, his own desires for success in his endeavors. This article aims to understand Garnier’s actions and his interference in delineating the translated literature offered to Brazilian readers. Based on correspondence from this editor sent to Louis Hachette, we will seek to analyze how preserving or violating foreign authors’ copyrights affected the circulation of translations in Brazil, especially the works of two of the most celebrated novelists of the time, Jules Verne and Countess of Ségur.
