Resumo
This article makes a study about the teaching of Portuguese word classes during the second phase of
Elementary Education and about how students of this level of school conceptualize words in their classes.
It also aims to verify the presence of multiplicity and coherence among the classification criteria of words
proposed by the linguist Joaquim Mattoso Câmara Junior for each of the ten grammatical classes, namely:
semantic, morphological and functional. The methodology adopted is the case study, and an open
questionnaire applied to 50 students from the 8th and 9th grade was used for data generation. The
theoretical foundation follows the postulates of Câmara Jr. (2008), Antunes (2007), Basílio (2004) and
Oliveira (1977). The results shows that there is in the students' perception as well as in the grammar
studies analyzed the semantic criterion has a prevalence over the others in the class classification of
words.
