Resumo
In Jacques Offenbach and the Paris of his time (1937), Siegfried Kracauer proposes to build the “biography of a society”, the Paris of the Second Empire. The author aims to determine the “social function” of Offenbach and his operettas, emphasizing the relationship between the artist and his time. The objective of this article is to discuss the hybrid form of the book that is configured, in the author's words, as “sociological literature” and, from it, the ambivalently subversive character of the offenbachiades.
