Objectives: to evaluate the importance of physical activity as a health promoter in people with physical disabilities (wheelchair users); comparing the risk factors for MS between athletes and non-athletes. Material and Methods: case-control, cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative study, through the physical evaluation of two wheelchair basketball teams in 2020. Results: Sample composed of 60 participants, 30 athletes with a mean age of 35.67 years (± 9.78) and 30 non-athletes with disabilities with a mean age of 38.63 years (± 9.90); anthropometric and biochemical profile: higher BMI (p 0.002) in the non-athlete group (23.24 ± 3.39) and athletes (20.55 ± 3.11); larger abdominal waist (p 0.008) in the non-athlete group (98.96 ± 16.20) compared to the athlete group (88.14 ± 11.70); higher DBP (p 0.011) in the non-athlete group (92.20 ± 13.10) compared to the athlete group (83.67 ± 9.12); relatively higher mean HDL (p 0.005) in the athlete group (45.37 ± 8.47). Conclusions: The clinical-laboratory profile of non-athlete wheelchair users showed changes in abdominal waist, BMI, DBP and HDL. There was a significant difference in MS between athlete and non-athlete wheelchair users, where the lipid profile, increased weight and diastolic blood pressure were in worse conditions in the non-athlete group.
