Resumo
The objective of this research is to raise similar issues and differences between pandemics throughout history and COVID-19, highlighting
the relationship with the society to which it affects. To respond to this scenario, a bibliographic and documental research was used, based
on newspapers, scientific articles, and official documents, among others. And as a result of the similarities of the social issues the following
topics were highlighted: social distancing; the disease denial; the blaming of the “enemy”; the miraculous “cures”; and finally, the Fake
News. On the other hand, in the scope of the differences it is mentioned: the population discrepancy and the commercial transactions that in
contemporary times take place in an exponentially greater volume than in the past, increasing the pandemic global impact on various fields
of human activity, such as health, economy, and education. And finally, the state surveillance present in modern times, which brings a greater
invasive, pervasive and of government control presence in the individual’s life, mainly through the possibilities arising from the advancement of
digital technologies. It is conclude, therefore that, historically, pandemics have brought in their wake social issues that are still present today,
reflecting positively or negatively both in fighting the spread of the disease, as well as regarding the individual and his relationship with the
social context in which he is immersed. Therefore, understanding these related and disruptive issues existing in the pandemic contexts during
history can bring us subsidies to face this scenario that challenges human existence itself.
