Resumo
This paper addresses meanings associated with the notion of modernity
in paintings and texts by artists Nazareno Confaloni (1917-1977) and Eli Brasiliense
(1915-1998). By promoting a dialogue with processes of modernity and their resonance
in the artistic milieu, it explores the singularities of an alleged regional modernism
while identifying an aesthetics with marked social features in Confaloni’s and
Brasiliense’s works. Moreover, based on Confaloni’s mural paintings in Goiânia’s
railway station, entitled Bandeirantes: Antigos e Modernos [“Bandeirantes: Old and
Modern”], as well as on Brasiliense’s novel Chão Vermelho [“Red Earth”], this paper
examines the way the Dominican ethics and its perception of the modern city and its
ideal of progress necessarily relate to contexts of labour and social criticism.
