Resumo
As a microhistory research, this paper seeks to analyse two areas connected with medical
care and charity practices in the Monastery of Santa Cruz of Coimbra: the domus infirmorum and
the St. Nicholas Hospital. Both were built in the middle of the 12th century by the two first priores
and followed the St. Augustine canonical rule. The first were the locus of care of sick monks
prescribed by the augustinian rule and by all the liber ordinis. The second take care of the poors, the
sick and old men and it also the pilgrims. The sick house and the charity hospital favoured the medical studies attested by the titles of the monastery armarium or library and the development of
preventive procedures and practica medica.
