Resumo

This research seeks to establish connections between curriculum theories, the history of art education in Brazil and the ways in which it is structured, with the goal of better understanding the ways in which studies on Visual Culture happen within the context of Brazilian basic education. This work is of a theoretical and bibliographical nature and is divided into three chapters whose subjects, respectively, are: some of the theoretical approaches that study curricular structures; the history of art education in Brazil from its emergence to present days; and the difficulties encountered by Visual Culture in integrating itself into the context of Brazilian basic education. This text cites authors from diverse backgrounds and contexts to better discuss the aforementioned themes, such as: Michel Foucault, Nicholas Mirzoeff, Ana Mae Barbosa, Paul Duncum, Tomaz Tadeu da Silva, Irene Tourino, Alice Martins, Leonardo Charréu, among others. This text doesn’t aim to exhaust all the reasons why Visual Culture studies are rarely mentioned in Brazilian basic education classrooms, but, rather, it highlights some structural, legislative, and ideological issues that influence these effects. Such as: the lack of properly qualified teachers in the field of Visual Arts, the stipulations of the BNCC (National Common Core Curriculum) regarding what should be taught in the classroom, the prejudiced conceptions that Arts Education is "less important" than other subjects, the reluctance on the part of many teachers to bring images from everyday life into the school environment, among many others.
