Resumo
The purpose of this article is to show that Ecolinguistics has a
tremendous potential as a theoretical model to be applied in the study of sign
languages. Besides always seeing language in context, the ecology of communicatie
interaction is its nucleus. Therefore, what tradition considers “language”, i.e.,
grammar, is considered as part of interactional rules: systemic rules (grammar) also
exist to enhance understanding. The essay argues further that the distinction
between “língua” and “linguagem” – which does not exists in Germanic languages – is
important for ditinguishing certain situations: the former refers to what we could call
“full language”; the latter designates situations like that of deaf people that interact
with members of their families by means of domestic signs, among other possibilities.
In summary, “língua” is a specific and special type of “languagem”.
