Resumo
Modernism played a fundamental role in the formation of João Cabral de Melo Neto, a poet who has a tense and contradictory relationship with this avant-garde. Among the modernists, the primary influence recognized by Cabral is Carlos Drummond de Andrade. The poet also takes Manuel Bandeira and Murilo Mendes as influential authors in his formative phase. Besides these and other modernists, Mário de Andrade was a particular reference for him, at least in thelate 1940s and early 1950s. However, there has been little reflection on this reference, and what is said is often based on dated statements by Cabral, leading to conclusions that, if generalized, turn out to be mistaken. Therefore, I propose to examine how Cabral, at a particular moment in his life, work, and history, considers Mário de Andrade a master.
