Resumo
This paper discusses the introduction of rural tourism in Terra Caída village, in the city of
Indiaroba/Sergipe. Specifically, we sought to characterize the physical and cultural aspects that
underpin the practice of local tourism and identify the strategies used by the local community for
insertion in the tourism practice. To develop this study were conducted bibliographic and documentary
research, supplemented by fieldwork, with systematic and direct observation and interviews with
community leaders. The village has its main source of employment and income in traditional fishing. In
recent times the production potential dropped down because of pressure from shrimp farming
activities, with significant changes in socio-spatial organization and territorial location. One also
considered for this reflection aspects of rural tourism and community-based factor of local
development and territorial reorganization. One analyzed the level of local social organization and its
interface with the development of tourism and the role of the Associação pela Cidadania dos
Pescadores e Moradores do Povoado Terra Caída. Results showed factors for the inclusion of the
community on tourism according to the model adopted by public policy and private initiative. It
concluded that the fetish promoted by tourism was perceived by local leaders who believed in tourism
as an economic alternative.
