Reinforcement corrosion is one of the main causes of degradation in reinforced concrete structures, leading to high maintenance costs and compromising structural safety. The Brazilian standard ABNT NBR 6118 addresses durability-related aspects but lacks detailed guidance on critical parameters, especially concerning chloride-induced corrosion. This paper presents a critical analysis of the Brazilian standards and their alignment with international guidelines (ACI, EN, AS), suggesting the adoption of complementary durability indicators. Parameters such as electrical resistivity, chloride diffusion coefficient, capillary absorption, water permeability, and curing quality are discussed as technical tools to support structural design. Research conducted in Brazil highlights the effectiveness of incorporating pozzolanic additives in mitigating the ingress of aggressive agents. As a practical contribution, a flowchart is proposed to guide the development of durability-focused structural designs based on measurable indicators. The analysis reveals the need for a regulatory revision that incorporates performance-based approaches to extend structural service life and reduce economic, social, and environmental impacts.
