| dc.description.abstract | This article deals with the concept of language as a social institution tributary to William Dwight Whitney (1827-1894). His thought about the nature of language represented a turning point in linguistic studies. Postulating that language was a social institution, Whitney, contradicting innatist theories, insisted that language is a human creation as all other social institutions. This would be the reason why language is constantly changing. Changes that would arise primarily in the speakers of a language, as they reflect on themselves as individuals and as members of a society. Two related processes would be involved: the change of speakers would cause change in language; language changes and such change would reflect a change in speakers. | pt_BR |
| dc.description.resumo | Trata-se, neste artigo, do conceito de língua como uma instituição social tributário a William Dwight Whitney (1827-1894). O pensamento deste sobre a natureza da língua representou um ponto de virada nos estudos da linguagem. Ao postular que a língua é uma instituição social, Whitney, contrariando teorias inatistas, insistiu que ela é uma criação humana como todas as outras instituições sociais. Esta seria a razão pela qual a língua sofre mudanças constantes. Mudanças que surgiriam primeiramente nos falantes de uma língua, na forma de eles refletirem sobre si como indivíduos e como membros de uma sociedade. Dois processos relacionados estariam envolvidos: a mudança dos falantes causaria mudança na língua; a língua mudaria e essa mudança refletiria uma mudança nos falantes. | pt_BR |
