Resumo

Myxomatous mitral valve disease is probably the main dog heart disease around the world. This disease courses with structural disorganization of the mitral valve components, annular dilation and weakness of chordae tendineae. The pathogenesis of this disease is still not fully understood, but it is known that is a progressive and degenerative disease which pharmacological therapy is effective in reducing the progression of the disease but is not healing. In some cases the patient, despite adequate pharmacological treatment, develops congestive heart failure, in these cases this patients are good candidates for curative treatment, or surgical treatment. Therefore this review shows the most common surgery procedures for the treatment of mixomatous mitral valve degeneration.
