Resumo
A relic of the Lignum Crucis, worshiped as a part of the true cross on
which Christ would have been martyred, is part of the imaginary built around the
mysteries of passion. In Portugal, the Military Order of St. John of Jerusalem or the
Hospital, became the guardian of this fragment of the Holy Cross which is
preserved in the Vera Cruz Marmelar's church. This object was present at crucial
moments in the history of Portuguese monarchy, especially during the Middle
Ages.
