Resumo

This study aims to provide an overview of road traffic crashes in the municipalities of Goiás, Brazil, focusing on identifying those with the highest risk of death and assessing road safety conditions. The methodology involved analyzing the period from 2021 to 2023, including the statistical characterization of victims and the calculation of road traffic crash rates and indicators, which were spatialized through thematic maps. The data used in the study included: the number of traffic-related deaths obtained from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS); population and territorial boundaries from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE); and vehicle fleet data from the Ministry of Transport. This approach enabled the identification of critical municipalities, defined as those with high mortality rate indicators. Notably, Vila Boa, Mimoso de Goiás, and Santa Tereza de Goiás were identified as the most critical, presenting the highest mortality rates per 100,000 inhabitants and per 10,000 vehicles throughout the analyzed years, despite having small populations and fleets. On the other hand, the municipalities of Campos Belos, Senador Canedo, Orizona, and Valparaíso de Goiás were identified as the safest, showing the lowest relative fatality rates and better road safety performance. Therefore, it is concluded that spatial and statistical analysis of road traffic crashes is an essential tool to support more effective and targeted public policies for reducing traffic-related deaths in the municipalities of Goiás.
