Resumo

This work seeks to demonstrate how Okinawan Traditional Karate has become an element of affirmation of the Okinawan people in relation to Japan. To do so, it seeks to present the nuances of a possible conflict over karate and to demonstrate the historical specificities of the Okinawan community in relation to Japan, as well as presenting the ideas of tradition around Okinawa karate and Japan karate. When considering strategies for dialogue between the local and the global, taking into account phenomena such as the Tokyo Olympics and the internet, it becomes possible observe how Okinawan Traditional Karate has been a way of projecting Okinawa's identity demands and claims. This occurs mainly through the claim of Okinawa as the birthplace of karate and ends up placing the foreign subject as a kind of arbitrator, as he is the recipient of many of these claims.
