Resumo

In the year of 1494 an event would transform the history of the city of Florence and would change the course of Italian political game, the entry of the French king Charles VIII into the peninsular territory, to claim the throne of the kingdom of Naples in the south of the region. In this context, the figure of the friar Girolamo Savonarola gained great importance, since the Dominican claimed to have predicted the approach of the king in his prophecy about the arrival of a ‘new Cyrus’ in Florence, a man who would free the people from the power of the tyrannical government and would enable the establishment of a republic as desired by God. This is how the cleric became a definitive reference as a political guide for the city of Florence, conducting the population through his sermons about the correct way of implementing the new republican regime and even writing, at the request of the magistrates from the beginning of the year of 1498, a book in vernacular containing his political-religious project for the city. Our proposal with this work is to understand the bases of this project through such sermons and his treatise; understand how this project could be configured at that specific historical moment, considering his claim as a prophet, the Florentine political culture and the analysis of his use of the concepts of 'common good', 'tyranny' and 'freedom', elements that made possible the defense of its precepts of a power of republican base, inspired by its Christian values.
