Resumo
This study aims to understand the participation of teacher Horieste
Gomes in the Brazilian Geography Renewal Movement. So, we used the
contextual approach method proposed by Berdoulay ([1981] 2003) to help
our research. Based on this methodological perspective, we investigated
geography development specifically, the so-called Critical Geography and
Horieste Gomes participation in the Renewal Movement. We understand
that science develops from two important factors: the first is the social
context in which it is and the second is the theoretical and methodological
bases that will support scientific thinking. In Brazilian Geography, in the
1960s, 1970s and 1980s, there was a meeting between these two factors,
providing a moment of epistemological rupture and the formation of a
new geographical science conception. This meeting enabled a
reinterpretation of Geography and its social function, both in the social
context, particularly the military dictatorship actions, and the politicalacademic setting, with the possibility of a pure Marxist reading, with no
interference. However, to go only to the original Marxism in a political
framework developer was not enough. There was a difficult task to be
done: join Marxist theory to geographical science. How could that be,
since Geography traditionally dealt better with physical aspects than with
humans? How to include Marxism in a science that for several years, had
only as a method the description? These issues, although secondary in
this research, are a difficult mission to the authors, who are the
protagonists of Geography Renewal Movement, as Horieste Gomes, with
a clearly Leninist conception, he can solve in their own way, all of these
problems. First by understanding that the scientific neutrality should not
exist for this geographical thinking, which means that the researcher
must adhere the worker group, carry out a research focusing on this
concept. With this argument, he strongly criticizes the previous currents,
Traditional and Quantitative Geography. It is also possible to understand
that the geographer can contribute to the formation of a society with
transformative consciousness, so, to adopt a dialectical and historical
materialism is what best contributes to this process. So, this method is
the only one that is able to provide a totalizing and emancipatory
analysis. From this point of view, he makes his considerations about
geographical knowledge with no dichotomy between Physical and Human
Geography. To understand that there is a relationship between human
and that it is mediated through work and to understand this, from the
historical and dialectical materialism, it is possible to realize that nature
is historicized and that man is naturalize, as this relationships gets
narrow. Finally, he clarifies that only the socialist mode of production is
able to harmonize the relationship between human and nature, since this
perspective, nature would not be seen only as a resource and the
socialization of contemplation could generate a environmental
consciousness.
