Resumo
This thesis is included in the subfield of the geography of religion, in which one the concept
construction of hierophant memory, based on the religious system of “sertanejo” popular
Catholicism and its forms of spatialization in the city of Juazeiro do Norte - Ceará.
Understanding the constitution of the hierophant memory runs through the analysis of three
fundamental points that structure the religious group, producing a narrative form in which one
the subjects recognize each other. The first point goes from the historical analysis of the
processes that structure the studied group, the existing theoretical contributions and the
examination of historical documents under the group are of fundamental relevance to
understand the relations that allow the subjects to recognize themselves belonging to the
same symbolic cultural system. This study’s second point is the understanding of the forms of
spatialization of devotional practices of “sertanejo” popular Catholicism, taking these spaces
as spatializing spaces of religious symbolic practices, constituting themselves of documents
that are going to be analyzed. We should seek to understand the materiality and immateriality
present in the religious systems, to map the sacred places that assume a character of cosmos,
differentiated from the profane space in its surroundings and how the resignification of these
places produces a memory of the place. The third point is composed of the collective memory
of the religious group of “sertanejo” popular Catholicism, making a mapping of the subjects
belonging to the symbolic system, attesting their belonging to this belief system, trying to
conduct interviews in order to understand the intersubjective form of subjects’ recognition and
the production of the group’s narrative. Based on these theoretical-methodological aspects, it
was possible to construct a picture under the hierophant memory of the “sertanejo” popular
Catholicism for its spatialization in Juazeiro do Norte, the ways that the narratives were
produced, the intentions that permeate this production and how the different subjects
recognize themselves as belonging to the same symbolic system of religious beliefs, here
called the “sertanejo” popular Catholicism. Space becomes a space of being, appropriated by
the symbolic cultural system, expressing both cultural context and social yearnings. The
hierophant memory constitutes the analysis’ basis for the understanding of different religious
symbolic systems and a contribution to theoretical discussions in the subfield of the
geography of religion.
