Resumo
The research is related to the representation of a nascent public sphere in the first newspaper of
Goiás, A Matutina Meiapontense, printed in the nineteenth century, published between the years of
1830 and 1834, in Vila de Meia Ponte, present city of Pirenópolis-GO. The empirical object of
research is a milestone in the history of journalism in Goiás and it has functioned as a new social
space for debates and discussions on themes emerging at that time. Walking in this direction, this
research investigates from a national historical event - the abdication of the first emperor of Brazil
D. Pedro I - and its consequences in the regional context of Goiás. The effort of this research was
to understand if from the appearance of the newspaper in Goiás was or not formed a kind of public
sphere, in the light of the concept of public sphere of the German researcher, the philosopher
Jürgen Habermas. For this, the content and discourse analysis was used as methodology, being the
latter, with the support of the devices: interdiscourse, positioning and polyphony.
